I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of Your Honour's letter of the 1st. instant on the subject of the rate of exchange for payment or Sterling Salaries.

I have already addressed the Secretary of

State for the Colonies in the matter and have asked for a ruling on the interpretation to be placed on the 2nd, paragraph of Lord Elgin's despatch No. 122 of the 11th. of June last and I await the Secretary of State's reply.

In the meantime the suggestion contained

in the Post Scriptum to your letter under acknowledgmont has been communicated to the Treasurer.
